Overview
Vietnam is experiencing steady growth in its vaccine market and increased attention toward life-course immunization, including adults, although adult vaccine coverage remains low relative to pediatric immunization.
The national Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) successfully covers childhood vaccinations with high coverage rates, contributing to eradications such as polio (2000) and neonatal tetanus (2005).1 However, adult immunization is not broadly established within EPI and coverage rates for vaccines like influenza remain very low (~1%) among adults.2
The vaccine market in Vietnam was valued at about USD 945 million in 2025, driven by growing government investment, private sector participation, and rising demand for vaccines outside childhood schedules including HPV, influenza, and pneumococcal vaccines as part of emerging life-course immunization programs.3,4
Urban centers such as Hanoi and coastal provinces have better vaccine access and awareness, while rural areas face persistent disparities in access and uptake, influenced by socio-economic factors and healthcare infrastructure gaps.5,6
Influenza vaccination programs targeted at healthcare workers and some high-risk populations have been supported by international partnerships, but lack of government reimbursement and public financing for most adult vaccines limits uptake.7,8
Government strategies emphasize scaling up adult immunization through increased private-public collaboration, improved local vaccine production, and public education, aiming to expand vaccination beyond childhood to reduce adult disease burden.

VIETNAM
National Expanded Program on Immunization Advisory Committee
Vietnam’s National Immunization Technical Advisory Group is a multidisciplinary group, and was reconstituted with 16 members, including pediatricians, epidemiologists, microbiologists, immunologists, public health experts, and other specialists in 2017.9 The secretariat consists of eight members. Committee members are nominated for five-year terms and are required to declare any conflicts of interest.10
The NITAG meets twice a year, with additional meetings convened at the request of the Ministry of Health. The decision-making process begins with the secretariat, which collects, synthesizes, and distributes background information to members. Decisions are made by consensus, requiring the approval of more than 50% of members. Working groups are established on an ad hoc basis depending on the topic under discussion.
Its terms of reference cover four key responsibilities: providing guidance on targeted immunization delivery, conducting assessments and research on immunization effectiveness, reviewing national immunization-related policies, and developing standard operating procedures for its operations.
Recommendations are summarized by the secretariat and submitted to the Chair for approval. Opportunities to further strengthen Vietnam’s NITAG include developing detailed operational regulations and organizing issue-specific workshops to support information sharing and updates.
RSV Vaccination in Older Adults in Vietnam
Vietnam currently does not have a widely established RSV vaccination program for older adults. RSV surveillance and adult immunization remain limited relative to pediatric vaccine efforts.
This first phase of our work focuses on RSV. Additional disease areas will be added as the dataset and analysis continue to expand.
Adult RSV vaccine availability and regulatory approval status in Vietnam is not documented to have advanced by 2025, with no listings of authorized RSV vaccines for adults locally.
Given the increasing recognition globally of RSV as a cause of severe respiratory disease in older adults and those with chronic conditions, Vietnam is expected to follow global trends in adopting RSV vaccines for adult use, but specific policy or rollout plans are yet to be detailed in official sources.
Challenges for RSV vaccine introduction in Vietnam will likely mirror those for adult vaccines broadly: need for public awareness, equitable healthcare access, regulatory approval processes, and financing solutions.
Increases in vaccine manufacturing capacity under government support and growing life-course immunization initiatives could enable future integration of RSV vaccines for older adult populations in Vietnam.
